(2015-2017) Provo Peaks Elementary after school Musical Theatre class (K-6th grade)
Last year I designed and presented a curriculum for a three-month after-school class. The children and I worked together using a ‘creative device’ to write a script combining characters from Frozen and Toy Story, entitled “Frozen Friends, A Toy Story.” Using a theme of inclusion vs. discrimination, we incorporated their strengths (acting, dancing, singing, Spanish, etc.). The children learned basic theatrical vocabulary, blocking, and projecting techniques, and I brushed up on my Spanish. (Five of the students were from Latin America and had been in the United States for less than the school year). I interacted with other staff, choir teachers, dance teachers, and ESL teachers coordinating with the After School Program resources and meeting with the Principal to get his ideas, support, involvement (he had a part too) and to keep him updated on our progress.  This play was presented in front of the student assembly and parents, then later filmed and distributed to the students and faculty involved. Writer, Director, Choreographer, DVD Editor, Costume, Set, & Prop Designer. For 2017-2018, we offered the opportunity to BYU students to staff the various Production Team positions in a production of “Straw Wars … in a Cafeteria Far, Far, Away” a musical with an anti-bullying message. Including more instructors will help to strengthen the program while enriching the lives of students both in the public school and in BYU.
